Kuru Disease
Part 1:
Kuru is a rare, fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by infectious abnormal proteins called prions. It was transmitted among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea via ritualistic canibalism, specifically consuming infected human brain tissue, leading to widespread brain damage known as spongiform encephalopathy.
Key Causes and Transmission Factors:
Prion Infection: Kuru is caused by misfolded prions that accumulate in the brain, causing normal proteins to also misfold and creating microscopic, sponge-like holes.
Endocannibalism: The disease was spread during funeral rites where relatives consumed deceased kin, particularly the brain, which carried the highest concentration of prions. Hollywood rumors on YouTube of celebrities and politicians eating infected brains.
Transmission Route: Infection occurred through ingestion of contaminated tissues or through contact with open wounds/sores.
Vulnerable Populations: Women and young people were disproportionately affected, as they were the primary participants in these traditional rituals.
Long Incubation: Though the practice stopped in the 1960s, cases appeared decades later due to the disease's exceptionally long incubation period, which can exceed 50 years
